As we laid out on the lawn to push off the coming dawn
we surveyed the heavens to build up a new life.
Clothes soaked through with dew,
and we knew no better than you
what tomorrow held up her sleeve;
dull knives or a nightlight.
We're too caught up in stills, too content to build plans... to try again.
Right on time the sun came up to blind us, so unprepared.
It's so unnerving now, we should've been more scared than we were,
but we knew. Yeah, we knew!
And we know now,
we never knew a goddamn thing about god or any damn thing...
The storms crashed through, calling out, they rattled our windows.
By day we'd survey the wreckage to dig up a smile,
our heads filled with bad ideas;
we couldn't have known any better than you.
It could've been the night winds that fucked us up,
or maybe the sun was what is was,
but whatever... we never hung our heads in shame
those long days. Low planes overhead screaming out for runways
on their approach never knew what would become of us,
but we knew. Yeah, we knew!
And we know now,
we never knew a goddamn thing about love or any damn thing...
